Co-parenting after a breakup: keeping your child at the center
When parents separate, children still need both of you. A few steady habits can protect them from the conflict and keep you close.

When a relationship ends, it can feel like everything else ends with it. But if you have children together, one thing continues: you are still their parents, both of you, for life.
Co-parenting is hard, especially when feelings are raw. You do not have to be friends with your child’s mother. You do have to find a way to work together for your child. These habits help.
Keep your child out of the middle
Never ask your child to carry messages, report on the other home or choose a side. Do not criticize their mother in front of them, even when you feel it is deserved. Children hear it as criticism of half of who they are.
Be reliable
If you say you will pick them up on Saturday at ten, be there at ten. After a separation, children often worry that the parent who moved out will slowly disappear. Every visit you keep, and every call you make on time, tells them you are not going anywhere.
Talk like colleagues
Keep conversations with your co-parent short, polite and about the children: school, health, schedules and money. Text or email can help when talking in person turns into arguments. If you disagree, handle it away from the children.
Pay what you agreed
Supporting your child financially is part of being present. If money is tight, talk about it honestly instead of going quiet.
Build your own traditions
Your time with your child does not have to copy the other home. Cook a meal together every visit. Start a Saturday football game. Keep a book you only read at your place. Small traditions make your home feel like theirs too.
Get support
Separation is painful for fathers too. Talk to people you trust, and consider a counselor or a mediator if the two of you cannot agree on the basics.
Your child did not choose the separation. What they need now is two parents who can put them first. You can be one of them.
